Tulip Box Card

Hello Everyone! If you follow along you saw the box card I created on my last post.

I purchased the Springtime Box Card SVG KIt from SVG Cuts and have to say I'm officially hooked on box cards!

Here is a look at the box card in the envelope.

When you pull out the card it is flat and here's how it looks.

Now for the big reveal....It pops open and WOW a 3D card.

(Even my boys and husband were impressed by this one...lol)

Here's a few more looks - looking down and the back. I used the pen tool to add a Birthday Message.

     

I switched up Mary at SVG Cut's card a bit. It was originally designed to have all the tulips at the same level.

Here's the SVG Kit:

I staggered them. Thought I'd share how I did it in the Silhouette Designer Edition Software.

STEP 1 - Open the SVG files for the 1st and 2nd set of tulips.

STEP 2 - Draw boxes to remove some of the stems - see red boxes highlighted below.

STEP 3 - Select Subtract under the Modify menu. It will delete the area you selected.

STEP 4 - Move the tulips and stems down to overlap the bottom strips.

STEP 5 - I outlined the images to show you how if you were to cut them now it would cut them separately.

Here is the tricky part....1) Select the bottom strips and hit ungroup. Select just the strip and the flowers/stems above it and select Weld.

(If you select the entire thing the numbers and fold marks would disappear) 

STEP 6 - If you select Cut Line Settings and select "Cut" this is how it should appear.

You are now ready to cut!

Sew Fun! Stitching on Paper

Hey all! Over on the SVG Cuts Facebook Wall a discussion was started by Deb of Deb’s Crafty Side. She and others were asking about stitching with a sewing machine on paper. This is a really fun technique and adds a perfect touch to projects.

Here are a few tips:

• Do not stitch thru adhesive - either add adhesive to the sections you do not plan to stitch or stitch and then adhere the stitched piece to your project.

• Deb asked if you can stitch two pieces of cardstock together - sure! I have not done more than two layers though.

• Try some different stitches. I inherited by machine and it only does a straight stitch - I plan to get a new one so I can do zig zag and other stitches.

• One great thing about stitching on paper is you don't have to be exact. If I was sewing a dress I'd be nervous my true sewing skills would be evident and it would fall apart while I was wearing it. You are just sewing paper so you can be adventurous.

Weekend Crop Tips & Checklist

As I am getting ready for my weekend crop next week thought I would share how I go about my planning process. With some careful pre-planning you can have a very fun & productive crop!


Send photos for printing. I try to narrow them down. I do one scrapbook per year so figure for most events you will only have room for 2-4 photos. In some cases you may do a 2 page layout so you’ll need a 4-8 for that. I use Snapfish for my photos. Don’t forget to order some 5x7’s for your pages or even 8x10’s!

After you get the photos back start to narrow those down even further - you can pass along extras to Grandmas or friends.

I like to plan things out so if you are doing a 2 page layout it falls on a left and right page. Not only are my scrap books in order but I must scrap them in order (just a little one of my super organized traits). Also gather up any other mementos for your layout - for example an invite, ticket stub, etc.



I use sketches alot - they are an easy blueprint to reference. They are usually pretty basic and a great starting point. Here is an example of sketch:

Get out your paper and pen and sketch out your page and write down some notes for journaling. It will help to think of things before the day of the crop. Also pick a title. If you are stumped on a title check out scrapbook.com for lots of great ideas.


Pull your papers for the page and put them into the folder. Don’t forget to include patterned papers along with some solids. If you stick to one line then you’ll be sure to match but does not hurt to mix and match too.

You could also cut any titles if you have time but if you take your cutter to the crop this isn't really necessary.

Your list may be different but this is a good starting point if you don't have a list!

Tip of the Week - Photoshop

I created this Fall layout for the recent Creative Charms Blog Hop. I am not usually overly concerned and don't usually try to match my photos to the papers I pick out but on this one - they really clashed. So after creating the layout I am going to reprint my photos using a duotone effect in Photoshop. Thought I would share how to do this.
Step 1 - Open up your photo in Photoshop

Step 2 - Under Image/Mode Select Grayscale

Step 3 - Go back to Image/Mode and Select Duotone

Step 4 - It will bring up a box. I kept mine black and for my second color I picked a gold color. You change the color by clicking on the square of color. Play around with different options until you find a good color combination.

Tip of the Week - You Can Change

This SVG is a freebie from 12/8/10 from SVG Cuts. I liked the owl but did not like the stern look on his face and did not need the scarf, branch or claws. I wanted a more “cutesy” owl for my Family Collage. So I made a few changes in SCAL (Sure Cuts Alot) and here is what I came up with:


Here is how I took the stern owl and made him cute:

Step 1 - Import the file called "brown.svg" and "darkbrown.svg". Other files are not needed.

Step 2 - Select the brown elements on the right and hit break apart. Then select & delete the cut out of the eyes and the claws.

Step 3 - Now you have all the elements you need. You just have to add some circles for the eyes using basic shapes.
